MORE than 80 polocrosse teams battled for bragging rights when they took to the field in Chinchilla for the Queensland State Championships last weekend.

Teams from Chinchilla, Taroom, Roma, Toowoomba, Warwick and Tambo and as far away as Albury in NSW, among others, vied for the title in a series of adrenalin pumping matches, but none could match the skills and horsmanship of Tansey.

Tansey won the A-grade final 21-20 against Albury Holbrook from New South Wales in a thrilling match, which went down to the wire. The club also snatched victory in the mixed and junior A-grade championships.

Chinchilla’s A-grade team was beaten by Albury and Tansey in the semi-finals but managed a win over Warwick in their final game, one which Chinchilla Polocrosse Club president Murray Sturgess said was a “real highlight for the locals”.

“We haven’t beaten Warwick for a long time and it means we’re back in business,” he said.

“The open men’s has some great young players coming through.”

Chinchilla beat Taroom to win the F-grade competition while Wandoan placed second.

“It’s a tremendous effort from our club to be able to host it and it’s a massive amount of work but it all came together in the end and everyone did their jobs and other clubs are very grateful for how it’s run in Chinchilla.”
