Looking back at the Smith Bros’ flight to Charleville

Western Times - - NEWS -

HANDY WORK: The Smith Bros’ stopover on their England to Australia flight in Charleville in 1919 resulted in an unscheduled delay to repair a broken propeller and damaged Rolls Royce V12 engine for the Vickers Vimy. Transported to Ipswich Railway Workshop for repairs, top mechanics worked on the engine while pattern makers built a new propeller. Using Queensland mahogany, they created a massive, four-bladed reproduction of the original, nearly 10 feet in diameter shown in this rare photo.
