Footy fever to hit town
Team win against Oakey
THE Warrego United Dos will be one of the teams to beat in this Saturday’s 2017 Reconciliation Carnival in Charleville.
The team took out a win against Oakey at the weekend and is hoping to back it up.
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Warrego United Dos team joined league legends in Oakey for a showcase of the sport.
The Australian Legends of League event on Saturday drew crowds from around the region to watch a variety of footy games on the day.
The Warrego United Dos played the Oakey Red Belly Blacks in a curtain raiser game before the Australian All Stars played the Oakey Legends.
The Dos team were the side to beat on the day, proving themselves a tough outfit, winning 22-10.
Warrego United Dos coach Travis Lawton said it was great to be a part of the event which attracted thousands of spectators.
“There was a strong crowd and it was a nice day overall,” Lawton said.
“The Oakey boys played well in front of their home crowd and we’ll play them again in four weeks in Gatton.”
Lawton and the team also attended the dinner on Friday night where they were able to mingle with some of rugby league’s greats, including Petero Civonceva, Scott Hill and Chris Walker.
The win from Saturday’s game will give them a boost going into the Reconciliation Carnival at Charleville this weekend.
“This will be our second annual carnival and it should be a really great day of footy,” Lawton said.
“I’m really looking forward to it and hopefully seeing my boys win.”
There will be five teams competing on the day, with players travelling from St George, Chinchilla, and Augathella.
There will also be two under-16s games on the day to give young players a run as well.
“It’s a great thing for the community and it will hopefully get the football fever back up and running in the town,” Lawton said.
The carnival will be held on Saturday at the Charleville Showgrounds. Kick-off is 9am.
