BRIS­BANE’S EA­GLE STREET is a culi­nary hot spot with its un­ri­valled view of the Story Bridge and Bris­bane River and a se­lec­tion of din­ing op­tions to match. This wide stretch of water back­ing on to the tall cliffs of Kan­ga­roo Point is glo­ri­ous by day, but by night the whole area twin­kles with lights dom­i­nated by the colour­fully lit Story Bridge, which changes its hue to suit the oc­ca­sion.

Look­ing for a quick cof­fee or a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Ea­gle Street Pier at 45 Ea­gle Street. Dis­cover sim­ple, hon­est food at ca­sual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flamegrilled burg­ers from Grill’d or soft and hard ta­cos, bur­ri­tos and na­chos at Mex­i­can taque­ria Guz­man Y Gomez.

For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet in­ti­mate cock­tail bar Mr & Mrs G River­bar. Named after its own­ers, veteran restau­ra­teurs Andy and Mar­cia Georges, it is right on the river bank and ad­ja­cent to the cou­ple’s much loved Il Cen­tro Restau­rant, home of the leg­endary Sand Crab Lasagne.

Spread­ing the fun of Bavar­ian bier and cul­ture around the globe, the Bavar­ian Bier Café’s wide bal­cony on the sec­ond level of Ea­gle Street Pier is a great spot for busi­ness lunches, after work drinks or a re­lax­ing din­ner. There’s an im­pres­sive range of im­ported beers at the Bavar­ian Bier Café, which also of­fers a good se­lec­tion of schnapps and wine. They are fa­mous for their schnitzel but also have lighter op­tions.

Pony has an un­com­pli­cated ap­proach to mod­ern Aus­tralian food with a flavour-driven menu and an ar­ray of share plates and wood-fired dishes. Saké Restau­rant & Bar serves up con­tem­po­rary Ja­panese cui­sine with a dis­tinct lo­cal flavour and has an ex­clu­sive range of pre­mium sakés im­ported di­rectly from Ja­pan. Try the Ot­sumami menu, which fea­tures small bites that are per­fectly matched with de­li­cious saké and shochu cock­tails.

A lit­tle fur­ther down the river at 71 Ea­gle Street, Ri­par­ian Plaza’s open prom­e­nade and plaza area fea­tures some of Bris­bane City’s most pop­u­lar wa­ter­side din­ing ex­pe­ri­ences, in­clud­ing Kings­leys Steak and Crab­house, River­bar & Kitchen and mod­ern Asian del­i­ca­cies at Madame Wu.

The River­side Cen­tre at 123 Ea­gle Street is home to Jel­ly­fish, Fri­day’s, Pig ’N’ Whis­tle, Groove Train, Black­bird Bar & Grill and Navala Chur­ras­caria.

Fri­day’s on Ea­gle Street fac­ing the river, boasts a large out­door river front ter­race fronting a huge is­land bar and is a pop­u­lar spot late in the evening un­til the early morn­ing.

The Waterline Restau­rant has an ex­ten­sive wine list and of­fers mod­ern Aus­tralian cui­sine. The Ter­race Grill is open for lunch and din­ner, with plump juicy char-grilled steaks, seafood and in­no­va­tive mod­ern Aus­tralian cui­sine.

Closer to the Story Bridge, Cus­toms House, with its grand colon­nades, por­tico, and cop­per-sheathed dome, is a fine ex­am­ple of Vic­to­rian Free Clas­si­cal style ar­chi­tec­ture, and also boasts ex­pan­sive river views. Cus­toms House Restau­rant is open for both lunch and din­ner. They are es­pe­cially ap­pro­pri­ate for a leisurely Sun­day break­fast avail­able on the river­side ter­race from 9am.

Fur­ther afield in Toowong, the Re­gatta Ho­tel is known as the Grand Lady of the Bris­bane River. Es­tab­lished in 1874, it has sur­vived fire and flood and now boasts the Boat­shed Restau­rant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Court­yard. Ex­ec­u­tive chef Daniel Flem­ing has de­signed menus which pro­vide an in­no­va­tive, broad range of dishes us­ing fresh, sea­sonal pro­duce.

The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks wind­ing through the city and cre­at­ing vis­tas to de­light din­ers both night and day.
