The award-win­ning Aus­tralian play “Ladies in Black” is play­ing at Melbourne’s Re­gent The­atre from 25 Fe­bru­ary. From the adap­ta­tion of Madeleine St John’s 1993 novel, the mu­si­cal is a cel­e­bra­tion of glam­our, gowns and grow­ing up in 1950s Aus­tralia. In 1950s Sydney when the city is on the cusp of be­com­ing cos­mopoli­tan, young high school grad­u­ate Lisa takes a hol­i­day job at Goodes, the most pres­ti­gious depart­ment store in town. In that sum­mer of in­no­cence, a world of pos­si­bil­i­ties opens up as she be­friends the ladies of the women’s frocks depart­ment—in­clud­ing her new men­tor, the ex­otic Euro­pean Magda, mys­te­ri­ous mis­tress of the dresses. The show fea­tures over 20 orig­i­nal songs writ­ten by Tim Finn and a stun­ning range of some 30 cus­tom-de­signed and cre­ated dresses and suits.
