MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY PRODUCTIONS
The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging several plays during September. On until 16 September is Amelia Bullmore’s witty U.K. comedy “Di and Viv and Rose”.
From different classes, from different places, with different experiences and expectations, Di, Viv and Rose would never have crossed paths if they hadn’t shared a flat all those years ago at uni. For a while, the laughs bound them together. But surely time, which delivers triumph, disaster and change so unpredictably, will slowly draw these three friends apart? The production stars three of Australia’s best known and most loved actresses—nadine Garner, Mandy Mcelhinney and Belinda Mcclory.
Opening on 23 September is “Hay Fever”, Noël Coward’s supreme comedy of bad manners. Although Judith, a retired actress, tends towards melodrama in her everyday affairs and her husband, David, a novelist, can be rather reclusive and foul tempered—the Bliss family can be perfectly charming when they want to be. Their grown-up children, Simon and Sorel, are quite capable of civility too—if it suits them. It is just that, on this blighted weekend, each has invited a guest to stay at their country house without telling any of the others. So dashed inconsiderate! And for their poor guests, perfect agony. Stars of the production include Marina Prior, Gareth Davies, Marg Downey and Simon Gleeson.
