Bendigo Art Gallery is stag­ing sev­eral ma­jor ex­hi­bi­tions dur­ing Septem­ber. On dis­play un­til 17 Septem­ber are the works of the 37 fi­nal­ists in the Gallery’s pres­ti­gious Arthur Guy Me­mo­rial Prize in­clud­ing win­ner Mar­garet Loy Pula’s en­try “Anatye (bush potato)”.

Open­ing on 29 Septem­ber is “The Cos­tume De­signer: Edith Head and Hol­ly­wood”. The ex­hi­bi­tion hon­ours the life and work of mul­ti­ple Acad­emy Award­win­ning cos­tume de­signer Edith Head. It brings to­gether more than 70 of her cos­tumes, from the 1930s to the 1960s, gleaned from the ar­chives of Paramount, the Col­lec­tion of Mo­tion Pic­ture Cos­tume De­sign and other pri­vate col­lec­tions. The ex­hi­bi­tion fea­tures gar­ments worn by such names as Shirley Tem­ple, Glo­ria Swan­son, Veron­ica Lake, Olivia De Hav­il­land, Jane Rus­sell, Au­drey Hep­burn, Fred As­taire and Yul Bryn­ner. Films high­lighted in the ex­hi­bi­tion in­clude “The Ten Com­mand­ments”, “Sam­son and Delilah”, “The Em­peror Waltz”, “Sun­set Boule­vard”, “Ver­tigo”, and “The Heiress”.
