MEL­BOURNE PUBLIC TRANS­PORT

Ex­tend­ing from the cen­tral business district in all di­rec­tions, Mel­bourne’s trains, trams and buses can help you ex­plore ev­ery cor­ner of this city. Public trans­port is sim­ple to use in Mel­bourne as one ticket gives you flex­i­ble travel be­tween the three modes of travel.

Train and tram ser­vices op­er­ate be­tween 5am and mid­night, Mon­day to Thurs­day, with ex­tended hours to around 1am on Fri­day and Satur­day nights. On Sun­day, trains and trams op­er­ate 7am–11pm.

Many of Mel­bourne’s bus routes have been up­graded to run from 6am–9pm Mon­day to Fri­day, 8am–9pm Satur­day and 9am–9pm Sun­day.

Public Trans­port Vic­to­ria is your cen­tral stop for in­for­ma­tion on public trans­port ser­vices, fares, tick­ets and ini­tia­tives. Up-to-date in­for­ma­tion is avail­able via the web­site, call centre and mo­bile ap­pli­ca­tions. En­ter your ori­gin and des­ti­na­tion into PTV’S on­line jour­ney plan­ner for travel any­where in Vic­to­ria and you’ll be pro­vided with a tai­lored travel plan in­clud­ing maps, con­nec­tions and es­ti­mated travel times.

myki

myki is the smart card tick­et­ing sys­tem in metropoli­tan Mel­bourne and se­lected re­gional towns. myki is a durable and re-us­able smart card that stores value to pay your public trans­port fare. myki users en­joy an in­te­grated tick­et­ing sys­tem that works across the state on trains, trams and buses. In­ter­state and over­seas vis­i­tors can now pur­chase the myki Ex­plorer Pack, for travel on Mel­bourne’s trains, trams and buses through­out their stay.

The myki Ex­plorer Pack in­cludes a myki smart­card pre-loaded with enough value for one day’s Zone 1 travel, in­struc­tions on how to use myki, an in­ner Mel­bourne tram map, a myki pro­tec­tive sou­venir wal­let, and dis­counts at 15 at­trac­tions worth more than $100 in sav­ings.

The myki Vis­i­tor Value Pack is avail­able from the PTV Hub at South­ern Cross Sta­tion, the Mel­bourne Vis­i­tor Centre at Fed­er­a­tion Square and Sky­bus ter­mi­nals at Mel­bourne Air­port and South­ern Cross Sta­tion.

Free Tram Zone

The Free Tram Zone in Mel­bourne’s CBD in­cludes the area of the Queen Vic­to­ria Mar­ket, Vic­to­ria Har­bour in Dock­lands, Spring Street, Flin­ders Street Sta­tion and Fed­er­a­tion Square. Travel on trams within this zone is free, and you won’t need a myki, however, if your jour­ney starts or fin­ishes out­side the bound­aries of the Free Tram Zone, you must touch on your myki at the reader in the normal way to make sure you have a valid ticket.

TAXIS

Taxis can be hired off the street, at des­ig­nated taxi ranks or by phone book­ing. There are taxi ranks all over the Mel­bourne CBD, in­clud­ing four safe city taxi ranks which have been es­tab­lished to give pa­trons and taxi driv­ers ac­cess to safe trans­port and fares late at night. On week­ends after 11pm, each safe city taxi rank is staffed by a se­cu­rity of­fi­cer in a dis­tinct uni­form.

CITY AMBASSADORS

For as­sis­tance with di­rec­tions, public trans­port en­quiries, events, and gen­eral ques­tions about Mel­bourne, keep an eye out for the City Ambassadors in their dis­tinc­tive red uni­forms, rov­ing the CBD from Mon­day–satur­day 10am–4pm, and Sun­day 12pm–3pm (ex­clud­ing Good Fri­day and Christ­mas Day).

SHOP­PING/ BANK HOURS

Large shop­ping cen­tres and spe­cial­ity stores are open from 9am–5pm Mon­day– Satur­day, Sun­day’s open­ing hours are from 10am, and clos­ing hour on Fri­days is 9pm.

Most banks are open 9.30am–4pm Mon­day–thurs­day, 9.30am–5pm Fri­day. Most banks are closed on week­ends.
