WITH THE FESTIVE SEASON in full swing, the thoughts of many turn to finding perfect presents for friends and loved ones. Fortunately, Melbourne is full of great places to buy uniquely Australian gifts. Here are eight of our favourites:

Heide is one Australia’s most popular destinations for modern and contemporary Australian art, so it’s no surprise to discover it sells some quirky locally-made products. Amongst its Victorian-made offerings are Apiary Made sustainable beeswax food wraps, Sands Made wooden products, Greenhaus Projects orb plants, Regina Middleton jewellery and Buttonworks timber-crafted items.

Fascinated by some of Melbourne’s strange right-hand turns? Well, visit The Melbourne Shop by Lumbi and you’ll find the locally-made board game, “Trams and Hook Turns”. The shop sells all sorts of Melbourne memorabilia including tram scrolls and banners, cushions, bags, t-shirts, pencil cases, coin purses, ipad and phone covers, t-shirts, greeting cards, postcards, badges, magnets, lamps and canvas art in an array of prints. All products are made at the company’s Fitzroy premises behind one of the company’s two Melbourne outlets.

Lord Coconut is Melbourne’s only retailer selling contemporary jewellery exclusively for men. The shop stocks over 600 individual jewellery pieces and represents over 40 Melbourne and interstate jewellers, artisans and designers. Ideal Christmas presents include cufflinks, rings, lapel pins, tie bars and necklaces.

Looking for socks with a difference? Head to the National Gallery of Victoria. The NGV design store has collaborated with Melbourne brand Tightology to produce unisex designed socks. The socks are one of a number of product lines designed especially for NGV stores. There’s also a range of jewellery from visual artist and

Jewellery by Aimee Fairman from National Gallery of Victoria.
