“Dream Lover – The Bobby Darin Mu­si­cal” is play­ing at Arts Cen­tre Mel­bourne’s State The­atre. This colour­ful show re­veals the life of Bobby Darin, the leg­endary Amer­i­can singer, song­writer and ac­tor. To­gether with his movie star wife, San­dra Dee, Darin pro­vided the sound­track to a gen­er­a­tion. As a re­sult the pro­duc­tion in­cludes 34 hits from the 50s and 60s in­clud­ing “Mack the Knife”, “Be­yond the Sea”, “Splish Splash” and the mul­ti­mil­lion-seller “Dream Lover”. David Camp­bell is play­ing Bobby Darin while Han­nah Fred­er­ick­sen is San­dra Dee. Other stars of the show in­clude Ma­rina Prior who plays the dual roles of for­mer show­girl Polly (Bobby Darin’s mother) and the am­bi­tious, cut­throat Mary Dou­van, San­dra Dee’s mother. Martin Crewes plays Steve Blauner, Darin’s old­est friend, big­gest fan and long­time man­ager while Mar­ney Mcqueen is Nina, Darin’s sis­ter. Rod­ney Dob­son plays Char­lie, the part­ner of Nina, and a warm fa­ther fig­ure to Darin.
