The inaugural “NGV Triennial” showcases major works by more than 100 artists and designers from 32 countries across all four levels of NGV International. The artists and designers have been selected for their diversity and dynamism of practice, including those embracing cutting edge technologies—from 3D printing to robotics, as well as performance, film, painting, drawing, installation and fashion design, tapestry and sculpture. Highlights of the free exhibition include a number of worldpremiere Ngv-led commissions, including a major new participatory work by Yayoi Kusama (Japan) in which visitors ‘obliterate’ a room with flowers. There’s also a 15.8-metre-long reclining Buddha sculpture adorned with 3D scanned and cast replicas of classical Greco-roman sculptures by Xu Zhen (China), creating a meeting of Eastern and Western art traditions.
