RACH­MANI­NOFF ON FIRE

Con­clud­ing a year of spec­tac­u­lar Rach­mani­noff per­for­mances, Syd­ney Sym­phony Orches­tra Artist in Res­i­dence Brett Dean brings the renowned com­poser’s Third Con­certo, best known from the movie “Shine”, to life. With Aus­tralian pi­anist Piers Lane as soloist, and fea­tur­ing Dean’s own “Fire Mu­sic” and Si­belius’ “Scenes with Cranes” from the play “Kuolema”, this per­for­mance is a poignant ex­plo­ration of death, re­ju­ve­na­tion and re­birth.

DREAM SE­QUENCE

Artist in Res­i­dence Brett Dean re­turns to Car­riage­works to con­duct the sec­ond program in their con­tem­po­rary se­ries for 2017. Ex­pe­ri­ence a mag­i­cal per­for­mance ex­plor­ing the strange work­ings of the sub­con­scious, fea­tur­ing new com­po­si­tions by Fin­nish vi­o­lin­ist and com­poser Erkki Veltheim and sonic artist James Hul­lick. En­joy mys­ti­cal tunes in­clud­ing Liza Lim’s “The Heart’s Ear” and Živkovic’’s “On the Guard­ing of the Heart”, as well as Dean’s amaz­ing tit­u­lar piece, “Dream Se­quence”.

SI­BELIUS & MAHLER: JA­NINE JANSEN RE­TURNS

Lauded for her out­stand­ing skills af­ter her Brahms con­certo in 2015, Dutch vi­o­lin­ist Ja­nine Jansen re­turns to Syd­ney with a daz­zling ren­di­tion of Si­belius’s “Vi­o­lin Con­certo” and Mahler’s “First Sym­phony”. Con­ducted by Thomas Søn­dergård, this per­for­mance show­cases Jansen’s mes­meris­ing mu­si­cal voice.
