A NEW EXHIBITION at the Art Gallery of New South Wales explores the work of John Russell, Australia’s French Impressionist. It is the first major survey of Russell’s work in 40 years and brings together 120 paintings, drawings and watercolours, drawn from the Art Gallery of NSW collection and from private and public collections around the world including the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Musée d’orsay in Paris and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Russell’s unique engagement with French art in the 1880s and 1890s led to his painting in a pure French impressionist style and forming close friendships with the leading artists in Paris, including Vincent van Gogh and Auguste Rodin.
