Free rig­ging night in lead up to mack­erel comp

A FREE mack­erel rig­ging night will be held to­mor­row night at the VMR from 6.30pm.

The night will fo­cus on spe­cific fish­ing tech­niques and tips for catch­ing mack­erel.

The Whit­sun­day Game Fish Club are host­ing the night in the lead up to their in­au­gu­ral fish­ing com­pe­ti­tion, the Mack­erel Chal­lenge, which is on next week­end from July 5-7.

The rig­ging night is aimed to in­crease the knowl­edge of all an­glers, in­clud­ing men, women and chil­dren, so they can join in the com­pe­ti­tion next week­end, how­ever club pres­i­dent Ash­ley War­land said any­one with an in­ter­est in fish­ing is wel­come.

Top­ics on the night will cover rig­ging, in­clud­ing garfish, rib­bon and fusiliers plus some tips on some of the best ar­eas and tidal con­di­tions to catch mack­erel.

The evening will be pre­sented by lo­cal fish­ing ex­pert Bob Spees, and will in­clude a talk from the lo­cal rep­re­sen­ta­tive from Queens­land fish­eries on mack­erel mi­gra­tion. “Th­ese rig­ging tech­niques will help you catch more fish,” War­land said, adding that re­gard­less of ex­pe­ri­ence, at­ten­dees will be sure to learn a lot and leave more con­fi­dent in their abil­ity to catch one of the Whit­sun­days’ favourite fish, which are re­port­edly about in good num­bers at the mo­ment. The VMR bar will be open and a bar­be­cue will be avail­able on the night, with pro­ceeds go­ing to char­ity.
