Free rigging night in lead up to mackerel comp
A FREE mackerel rigging night will be held tomorrow night at the VMR from 6.30pm.
The night will focus on specific fishing techniques and tips for catching mackerel.
The Whitsunday Game Fish Club are hosting the night in the lead up to their inaugural fishing competition, the Mackerel Challenge, which is on next weekend from July 5-7.
The rigging night is aimed to increase the knowledge of all anglers, including men, women and children, so they can join in the competition next weekend, however club president Ashley Warland said anyone with an interest in fishing is welcome.
Topics on the night will cover rigging, including garfish, ribbon and fusiliers plus some tips on some of the best areas and tidal conditions to catch mackerel.
The evening will be presented by local fishing expert Bob Spees, and will include a talk from the local representative from Queensland fisheries on mackerel migration. “These rigging techniques will help you catch more fish,” Warland said, adding that regardless of experience, attendees will be sure to learn a lot and leave more confident in their ability to catch one of the Whitsundays’ favourite fish, which are reportedly about in good numbers at the moment. The VMR bar will be open and a barbecue will be available on the night, with proceeds going to charity.
For more information call Ashley Warland on 0413 628 899 or visit the game fish Facebook page.
MONSTER MACKEREL: Mackerel are about in good numbers at the moment, so it’s a great time to enter the Mackerel Challenge from July 5-7. Here Tom Svetec from Wagga Wagga displays a Spanish mackerel caught while fishing with Whitsunday Fishing Charters this week.
