Raiders topple Redskins
RUGBY UNION A GRADE
ANOTHER polished attacking display helped the Proserpine/Whitsunday Raiders to a 38-28 win over the Mackay City Redskins in Mackay on Saturday.
Two early tries helped the Raiders build a quick lead and the good work in attack continued as they built a 26-6 lead at half time.
A try to Shannon Wolland made the lead 33-6 but City were far from out of the contest and hit back with two unconverted tries of their own.
Both teams traded tries in a highscoring second half as the Raiders hung on for an important 10-point win.
Coach Hemi Taukiri said although the boys didn’t find top gear he was happy that a win is a win.
The reserves were able to back up the A grade performance with a fresh team to post a 28-14 victory.
Despite starting against the wind the Raiders scored a quick try through Dom Kermac before the home side levelled it up.
Kermac scored again shortly after and a try from sprightly rookie Justin Chengody gave the reserves a 21-14 midway through the second half.
Resolute defending kept City scoreless in the second half as the reserves strolled to a comfortable 14-point win.
The A grade team has a bye this weekend so the reserves will take centre stage in their match against Bowen from 7.30pm this Friday night at the Whitsunday Sports Park.
