Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY VIEWS - Leanne Abernethy

THE announcement this week that Airlie would host a Queensland Rugby League (QRL) match in early August and then Whitsunday Regional Council’s decision yesterday to support the annual Whitsunday Reef Festival are both very welcome announcements.

August is certainly shaping up to be a busy month for Airlie Beach with the QRL match between Mackay Cutters and Brisbane’s Norths Devils early in the month and then the annual reef festival and popular sailing events, Airlie Beach Race Week and fun race mid-August.

The reef festival will be holding a street party with the backing of Council to co-incide with the official opening of Airlie’s new main street. The main street upgrade won’t be totally finished but we have been assured most of the work will be completed and the traffic will be travelling in both directions by that time.

It’s been a long and difficult 12 months for the main street traders and Airlie Beach shoppers while the works have been carried out.

We can only hope that the refurbished street looks good and that the flood mitigation works have also been a success.

With the financial year almost over, we hope that Airlie Beach can look forward to a better trading year in 2013/2014 and that the events of August will be a welcome boost to our economy.

With Whitsundays Marketing and Development currently pushing the 100,000 reasons to visit Airlie Beach campaign, now is a good time to talk to your friends and family in other parts of the country and encourage them to visit.

We live in paradise – lets promote it to help our local tourism industry.
