Club championships coming to a close
ON WEDNESDAY the final of the club championship singles was played between Joan McGrath and Annette Patullo.
McGrath held her nerve in the final to claim a 25-14 win.
In social play on Wednesday Laurie Brew (visitor from Coonabarabran), Cathy Holmes and Joy Jeffries defeated Jo Peasley, Pepper Evans (visitor from Coonabarabran) and Heather Patullo 2019 and Fran Porter, Morris Hulme (visitor from New Zealand), Joyce Patullo and Heather Brown defeated Janet Mortimer, Amy Hart, Betty Evans (visitor from Coonabarabran) and Jack Davis (visitor from Melbourne) 28-18.
The ladies last day of pennants was on Thursday at North Mackay and they had an overall loss 24-59 earning no match points minus 35.
Maree Daffara’s team were defeated 8-34 and Joan McGrath’s team were defeated 16-25.
Over the entire competition they scored 9 match points plus a margin of 18.
The team finished runners-up in division 3 with Seaforth winning the division.
Yesterday the inter-town shield was played at Proserpine.
The final of the B singles will be played on Wednesday, July 17 between Amy Hart and Dell McCormack, (marker Heather Brown) as will the final of the club championship pairs between Jo Peasley and Joan McGrath against Lois Read and Dot Hinschen.
The final of the club championship triples is on Wednesday, July 24 with Noelie Dibben, Pam Selmes and Gail Camm playing Margaret Russell, June Blair and Dot Hinschen.
Also coming up on Thursday, July 18 at St Helen’s is the Friendship Shield.
The team for the Friendship Shield is Lois Read, Heather Patullo, Gail Camm, Maree Daffara, Noelie Dibben, Flo O’Hanlon, Heather Brown, Joan McGrath, Jo Peasley, Joy Jeffries, June Blair and Dot Hinschen.
The team for the Johnston Shield being played at Sarina on Tuesday, July 23 against Seaforth is Joan McGrath (singles), Gail Camm and Dot Hinschen (pairs) and Lois Read, June Blair, Heather Brown and Maree Daffara (fours).
On Saturday, there were three games of singles played.
In the semi-final of the B singles Todd Leys defeated John Henderson 25-21 and in the second semi-final of the senior singles Kevin Thorogood defeated Kevin Duell 25-11.
In the first game of the mixed singles Heather Brown defeated Matthew Camm 25-12.
On Sunday in social bowls Trudy Hanne, Rob Taylor and Joy Jeffries defeated Ron Norman (local visitor), Jeanette Calway and Kevin Thorogood 22-11, Noelie Dibben and Philip Brown defeated Trevor Trevillian (visitor from Bateman’s Bay) and Heather Brown 22-17 and Arthur Williams and Dot Hinschen defeated Jo Peasley and Maree Daffara 21-18.
In the other game John Henderson defeated Janet Mortimer 25-15.
Some of the men’s teams went away to Bowen to play in one of their annual carnivals.
It was won by a team from Townsville, with North Mackay second and Shane Spann’s team from Proserpine coming third.
This Saturday at 9.30am the club championship fours semi-finals are on with Kevin Duell, Dean Lovelock, Shane Kinnear and Ross Reville taking on Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton, Michael Kinnear and Grahame Kinnear; and Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kinnear and Barry Saroglia playing Philip Brown, Martin Corr, Rob Taylor and Barry Zillmann. The final will be played in the afternoon. Also to be played on Saturday afternoon with a 1.30pm start is the mixed singles game between Maree Daffara and Shane Spann and the second semi-final of the B singles between Matthew Camm and Arthur Williams (marker John Henderson).
There may also be the mixed singles games, subject to the results of the morning’s fours games.
This Saturday the club is putting on a light celebration luncheon at the club for all pennants players.
On Sunday, July 14 at 1.30pm club championship pairs will be played between Dean Lovelock, Shane Kinnear, Brian Pearce and Barry Saroglia.
