RUNNING

WHITSUNDAY Triathlon Club members Steve Jackson, Ebony Banes and Maja Zepcan competed in a range of running events at the Gold Coast Marathon Festival on the weekend.

Hamilton Island was represented in two races, the half marathon with Steve Jackson and Ebony Banes and Maja Zepcan taking on the full 42.2km.

Jackson was hopeful of a top ten finish in his age group and another fast time and he went through the initial 10km in 35 minutes.

Gradually the packs broke up and the focus turned to survival and Jackson held on to claim the bronze medal in the 40-44 age group and finish 57th overall in the 9000 plus field with a time of 1:15:42.

Zepcan and Banes came in confident with good form in recent triathlons and running together helped things greatly in the initial stages.

Banes felt strong and pressed ahead, smashing her best by over 40 minutes to finish in 3:36 and 29th in her 230 plus strong age group. Zepcan struggled with some minor heatstroke but still soldiered on for her new best time of 3:44.

All the athletes will be looking at recovering quickly so they can put their best foot forward in the upcoming Airlie Beach Running Festival on July 21.

GREAT EFFORT: Whitsunday Triathlon Club members Ebony Banes and Stephen Jackson after finishing the Gold Coast half marathon last weekend.
