New chamber aiming to make Airlie a resort town

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE Airlie Beach Chamber of Commerce has annouced its intention to transform Airlie Beach into a resort town during the upcoming September school holidays.

The annoucement was made at a town meeting, hosted by the chamber’s interim committee at the Airlie Beach Hotel last week.

Interim president Heidi Ward told the 50-plus attendees that every guest arriving in town from September 20-October 8, would be handed a full schedule of events open to tourists and lo- cals alike. She gave a brief overview of suggested activities that included simple ideas such as storytelling at Leah’s Book Exchange, a kid’s club on the beach and power walking in the mornings.

“Every tourist that visits Airlie Beach in September will have a really clear indicator that we’re trying, that we want their business, that we want them to return and that we love the place that we live in,” she said.

This was just one of the positive initiatives put forward by the brand new chamber, which is scheduled to hold its first annual general meeting on August 6. On this date, permanent committee members will be elected and six sub-committees for retail, hospitality, accommodation, sport and recreation, events, entertainment and arts and professional services and trades, are expected to be formed.

In the meantime, the interim committee has stressed the need to start taking action and “walk the walk”.

Interim committee member Philip Larsson said it was imperative that Airlie Beach business people put the past behind them and stopped focusing on blame. He said change was vital for survival and he urged the business community to join forces and work as a team.

“Like it or not, if Airlie fails, we all fail. If Airlie succeeds, we all succeed,” Mr Larsson said.
