Reef concern

Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY VIEWS -

I WONDER how Mr Brad Fish, CEO of North Queensland Bulk Ports can be confident of the company's ability to manage the proposed dredging ( Whitsunday Times, 11 July 2013, page 7). Our Great Barrier Reef is up to 20,000 years old, so 30 years experience seens a little short for NQBP to claim no long term impacts. And Mr Fish's claim to be able to predict and manage unpredicted impacts sounds like mumbo jumbo to me. We have a declining mining sector, and urgent need to invest in protection of the reef. Our Minister for Environment, Heritage and Water, Mark Butler, should follow the precautionary principle and provide the best possible protection for the reef, forever.
