French Affaire proves popular

FRENCH berets, stunning cocktail dresses, bright red lipstick, striking suits and even a few fake moustaches were all part of the excitement at Deja Vu Restaurant’s A French Affaire on Saturday night.

The fifth annual event was held as a Bastille Day celebration that brings a little bit of France to Airlie Beach by showcasing an exquisite range of French cuisine, fashion, music and art.

A French Affaire is the brainchild of Deja Vu owners Sarah and Patrice Duverger, which was started to help Mr Duverger celebrate his country’s national day and recreate the traditional foods he was inspired by as an apprentice chef.

The mouth-watering smells flowing from the kitchen were transformed into beautiful French-inspired canapés including foie gras, cheeses, dips, breads, crepes and traditional ragouts to the delight of guests.

Local musician John Garland humbly per- formed a range of French classics infused with his characteristic jazz-piano cabaret style on the restaurant’s pool deck.

To help create that extra special Parisian feel, local artist Suzi Hancock had some of her elegant charcoal drawings on display alongside fellow artist Dot Smith who supplied some exquisite nude sculptures for guests to admire.

Owner of Blackbird Boutique Bridgette Middleton also teamed up with Amazing Place jewellery to create a 20-minute French-inspired fashion show on the night.

“The event had such a great atmosphere and everyone loved that we had different sized models showcasing all of the latest summer styles,” Ms Middleton said.

The best dressed prize for the Montmartre-themed night went to Debbie Legge, who won a $300 voucher for Australian clothing label Wyse, which is stocked by Blackbird Boutique. The new Blackbird Boutique store located on the main street of Airlie Beach officially opens today.

PARISIAN EXPERIENCE: It was a celebration of Bastille Day for sculptor Dot Smith, owners of Deja Vu Restaurant Sarah and Patrice Duverger and Danielle Krista who won the second best costume prize at the restaurant’s A French Affaire event on Saturday night.
