Heartkids champions meet on Hamo
CANNONVALE teenager Georgie Nowell is proving herself a real HeartKids champion by raising awareness of childhood heart disease (CHD).
Last weekend, the 15-year-old schoolgirl attended the third annual HeartKids Qld charity golf day at the Hamilton Island Golf Club, where she met up with V8 racing champion Craig Lowndes.
Georgie, whose nine-year-old sister Ella has been fighting the disease since birth, has been campaigning for HeartKids Qld by racing a branded HeartKids go-kart around the state.
On Sunday, her hard work and dedication were rewarded with the opportunity to meet Lowndes, who is also a champion of the HeartKids cause.
At their meeting, Georgie spoke openly and honestly about the challenges of fighting CHD and how HeartKids Qld helps.
“I am often asked what is HeartKids? And to be honest I can never explain exactly what it is or what it means to me because words can not describe what HeartKids does for sick babies and their families,” Georgie said. “Yes it helps raise awareness for sick babies with life-threatening heart problems, but until you have walked through the heart wards and ICU at the hospital and said “goodbye and I love you”, not knowing if that's the last time you're ever going to see your daughter, son, brother or sister again... no one ever really knows what it's like unless you've been in the shoes of those people and that's what I feel my role is, because I know what it's like and I want to help HeartKids,” she said.
The charity golf day, organised by Hamilton Island residents Kerri and Troy Martin, was a sell-out event that raised over $38,000 for the not-for-profit organisation, committed to enhancing the lives of children born with CHD.
Emma Hart from HeartKids Qld said the money raised would provide assistance for families through its family support, awareness and advocacy programs.
