Open ABC workshops promote learning by doing
WHITSUNDAY residents wanting to hone their writing, photography and video-making skills have been given access to a wonderful mentor in ABC Open producer Dan Battley.
Mr Battley’s inaugural series of ABC Open workshops were held at Whitsunday Regional Council libraries last week and proved popular with both members of the community and library staff.
One of Mr Battley’s most important messages for budding authors, photographers and film-makers was “learn by doing”.
“I don’t have the magic formula to be a great photographer,” he said at Cannonvale’s Beach Library last Thursday night.
“I can tell you all the technical aspects, but you’ve just got to go out there and keep taking photographs.”
Mr Battley used these first workshops to run through the ABC Open website as the platform through which participants can share and effectively “publish” their creative work.
Each month, new projects are uploaded to the website encouraging participants to challenge themselves with a different theme. Photography themes have included ‘reflections’, ‘after dark’ and now ‘wild’. On the writing front, themes for the 500 words project have included ‘things we do for love’.
Beach Library team leader Kerry Dorman said overall the workshops were a fantastic learning experience that enabled participants to publish their work and “get it out there”.
Proserpine Library team leader Robyn Batman agreed.
“And it’s another platform that libraries can be used for,” she said.
“It demonstrates the library’s role as a community hub, not just through books but also in the digital world.”
Mr Battley will be back in the Whitsundays in September to hold writing and photography classes at the Proserpine Library on September 18 and Beach Library on September 19. Bookings are not required. For information on current ABC Open projects visit www.open.abc.net.au.
