Proserpine retains inter-town shield
PROSERPINE retained the inter-town shield on the weekend when winds fortunately held off the rain until after the day’s play was completed.
All games were fiercely competitive and played in great spirit.
Proserpine retained the shield winning this year’s contest by two match points, four rink wins plus 40.
Wangaratta came second with one match win, four rink wins minus 2 and St Helens came third with 0 match wins, 1 rink win minus 38.
There were also two games of social bowls played in the afternoon where Cathy Holmes and Flo O’Hanlon defeated May Davy and Barbara Dammash 5-4 in a short game of 3 bowl pairs. Trudy Hanne, Arthur Williams and Pepper Evans (visitor from Coonabarabran) defeated Fran Porter, Betty Evans (visitor from Coonabarabran) and Trevor Trevillian (visitor from Bateman’s Bay) 23-12.
On Wednesday, July 24 the final of the club championship triples will be played with Noelie Dibben, Pam Selmes and Gail Camm taking on Margaret Russell, June Blair and Dot Hinschen.
On Thursday, July 18 Proserpine will be travelling to St Helen’s to contest the annual Friendship Shield from 1pm.
The team selected is Lois Read, Heather Patullo, Gail Camm, Maree Daffara, Noelie Dibben, Flo O’Hanlon, Heather Brown, Joan McGrath, Jo Peasley, Joy Jeffries, June Blair and Dot Hinschen.
The team for the Johnston Shield has also been selected with Joan McGrath in the singles, Gail Camm and Dot Hinschen in the pairs and Lois Read, June Blair, Heather Brown and Maree Daffara in the fours.
The first game is against Seaforth at Sarina on Tuesday, July 23 at 1pm and winners of these games progress to the semi-final at Sarina on Thursday, July 25.
Monday, July 29 is the Whitsunday Carnival and teams need to register as soon as possible for this fours event.
Members are asked to remember to bring in two cent sales for the day.
Despite the intermittent showers, the full draw of mens games was played this weekend.
On Saturday morning, both semi finals of the championship fours were played where Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton, Michael Kinnear and Grahame Kinnear defeated Kevin Duell, Dean Lovelock, Shane Kinnear and Ross Reville 23-6 and Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kinnear and Barry Saroglia defeated Philip Brown, Martin Corr, Rob Taylor and Barry Zillmann 19-12.
The final was played in the afternoon and Ben Cutrone, Brian Pearce, Scott Kinnear and Barry Saroglia defeated Nathan Dodds, Scott Hamilton, Michael Kinnear and Grahame Kinnear 35-15. Also on Saturday afternoon there were three games of mixed singles played.
Wayne Handley defeated Ross Reville 25-11, Dean Lovelock defeated Philip Brown 2517 and Maree Daffara defeated Shane Spann 25-20.
On Sunday afternoon in a game of club championship pairs Dean Lovelock and Shane Kinnear defeated Bryan Davy (sub for Brian Pearce) and Barry Saroglia 18-16.
There was one game of social bowls on Sunday afternoon where Arthur Williams and Manfred Krug (visitor from Finley) defeated Fran Porter and Trevor Trevillian (visitor from Bateman’s Bay) 26-14.
This Saturday at 9.30am both semi-finals of the club championship pairs are on with Ben Cutrone and Scott Kinnear playing Nathan Dodds and Scott Hamilton and Michael Kinnear and Grahame Kinnear taking on Dean Lovelock and Shane Kinnear.
The final will be played at 1.30pm with the winners of the morning games.
Also at 1.30pm is the B singles semi-final between Matthew Camm and Arthur Williams (marker John Henderson).
This Sunday at 1.30pm start Philip and Heather Brown play Matthew and Gail Camm in the mixed pairs and Janet Mortimer and Kevin Thorogood take on Joan McGrath and Shane Spann.
