Raiders post big win over Broth­ers

MACKAY Broth­ers were un­able to match it with the Proser­pine/Whit­sun­day Raiders on Satur­day go­ing down 57-8 at the Whit­sun­day Sports Park.

The con­test was close early and de­spite the lop­sided score line the home side didn’t post points un­til the 23rd minute when prop for­ward Pablo Roveda’s try was con­verted by his brother Martin for a 7-0 lead.

Se­nior player Trent El­son crossed in the 34th minute be­fore an op­por­tunist drop goal by Broth­ers sailed be­tween the posts for a 17-3 half time to the Raiders.

Terry Saun­ders scored two great tries af­ter half­time and Leam Wil­liams was next to score be­fore Broth­ers fi­nally broke through to make the score 43-8.

Coach Taukiri turned to his re­serves in the fi­nal quar­ter of the game with Bill Pratt, James Smith, Steve Small­man, Tosh Pid­geon, Justin Chen­gody, Luc Boyer and new­comer Ar­gen­tinean San­ti­ago Fi­jelkaus all get­ting a run.

The match had in­tense mo­ments of tight play but opened up to be a run­ning spec­ta­cle from both sides with the Raiders com­fort­able win­ners in the end.

This Satur­day the Raiders host the Slade Point Slash­ers with A grade set to kick off at 5.30pm.

Ju­nior rugby is now in full swing ev­ery Fri­day night at the sports park play­ing through­out term 3 of school.

Next week­end the ju­nior Raiders look for­ward to host­ing their car­ni­val for un­der-10s, 12s, 14s and 16s from 8am-4pm Satur­day and 9am-3pm Sun­day.
