Raiders post big win over Brothers
MACKAY Brothers were unable to match it with the Proserpine/Whitsunday Raiders on Saturday going down 57-8 at the Whitsunday Sports Park.
The contest was close early and despite the lopsided score line the home side didn’t post points until the 23rd minute when prop forward Pablo Roveda’s try was converted by his brother Martin for a 7-0 lead.
Senior player Trent Elson crossed in the 34th minute before an opportunist drop goal by Brothers sailed between the posts for a 17-3 half time to the Raiders.
Terry Saunders scored two great tries after halftime and Leam Williams was next to score before Brothers finally broke through to make the score 43-8.
Coach Taukiri turned to his reserves in the final quarter of the game with Bill Pratt, James Smith, Steve Smallman, Tosh Pidgeon, Justin Chengody, Luc Boyer and newcomer Argentinean Santiago Fijelkaus all getting a run.
The match had intense moments of tight play but opened up to be a running spectacle from both sides with the Raiders comfortable winners in the end.
This Saturday the Raiders host the Slade Point Slashers with A grade set to kick off at 5.30pm.
Junior rugby is now in full swing every Friday night at the sports park playing throughout term 3 of school.
Next weekend the junior Raiders look forward to hosting their carnival for under-10s, 12s, 14s and 16s from 8am-4pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.
STRONG WIN: Whitsunday Raiders A grade player Sean Condon achieved a successful lineout during the clash with Mackay Brothers at the Whitsunday Sports Park on the Saturday.
