Passionate businessman returns
Telstra awards invite Airlie Beach local back
AIRLIE Beach businessman Tony Laurent has been flying the flag for the Whitsunday region at the 2013 Queensland Telstra Business Awards.
Mr Laurent, whose Airlie Beach main street travel agency won the category for best small business in 2012, struck an additional chord with Telstra and the business community through his passionate and genuine acceptance speech.
Although he did not enter AirlieBeach.com into this year’s awards, his words were remembered and he was asked to return as a guest presenter for the 2013 main event.
On Tuesday, July 16, Mr Laurent took to the podium and once again spoke from the heart about the core values that have helped him to grow his business.
As the owner of a small business that has survived the turmoil of the Airlie main street upgrade and tourism downturn, Mr Laurent was well placed to offer others in the business world some good advice about core values of sincerity, authenticity, honesty, caring and consistency.
“Believe me, if you stick to these simple values, you’ll soon win the biggest prize of all and that’s trust,” he said.
Mr Laurent also shared his views on the importance of being responsive to change, quoting Charles Darwin’s theory that it wasn’t necessarily the strongest or most intelligent species that survived, rather those that were willing to adapt.
The Telstra Business Awards were launched in 1992 to recognise the achievements of small and medium businesses and to share their growth ideas and strategies in a way that would benefit the wider business community.
Mr Laurent said it was an honour both to win and to speak at the awards and to continue to promote Airlie Beach.
His full speech is available to view at 2013 Queensland Telstra Business Awards on YouTube.
