Clean sweep for series winner
THE Whitsunday Sailing Club’s ( WSC) XXXX series wrapped up last weekend with a short offshore race on Saturday and a bay race on Sunday.
Saturday’s race took crews to Double Cones, around Armit Island and back to the finish in the front of the sailing club.
WSC sailing development officer Tim Parker said while a light 8-10 knot breeze prevailed, the race started in Pioneer Bay with just three knots of wind from the north.
Tulip (Bernie van’t Hof), was first back into the bay, managing to finish just after 3pm.
Reignition (Charles Wallis), was close behind, managing to take handicap honours from Tulip in second and Twister (Kevin Fogarty) in third.
Just one-and-a-half minutes behind them was Wobbly Boot (Craig Piccinelli), in fourth place.
Although Treasure VIII (Harold Menelaus), finished third across the line, a tough handicap meant a final finish in fifth place.
Zippy (Bernie McErlane) and La Quilter (Heather Sutton), both persevered, but pulled out when the wind dropped completely.
Sunday’s afternoon bay race concluded the XXXX Series in an eight-knot east/northeast breeze.
The boats set off on four laps around a windward/leeward course, of just under 10 miles.
Tulip was first to finish in under two hours, with Reignition in second place and winning on line honours.
