Players excel during state titles
THREE Bowen polocrosse club players travelled to Capella to represent the Far Northern Zone at the Queensland Zone Titles earlier this month.
The Far North Zone extends from Bowen in the south to Trinity Beach north of Cairns.
The zone titles brings teams from all over the state to play against each other every two years in a number of competitions including mens, womens, mixed and juniors.
The far north sent seven teams, with two men’s sides, two women’s sides, two mixed (four men and four women), and a junior team.
Proserpine local Lui Raiteri was in the top 12 men in the zone when he was selected to play in the second men’s side.
Cannonvale local Ellisa Davis and Bowen local Del Norman were both selected in to the first women’s side, putting them in the top seven women in the zone. The players travelled down to Capella Thursday and trained as a team before games commenced.
Competition for the far north teams was fierce with many of the southern teams having players that had represented Queensland on more than one occasion.
Ellisa Davis said that all the teams played well.
“Our zone is very proud of how the teams went at zones this year.
“Our competitiveness has improved a lot and there have been a lot of comments made from other zones about how well our teams were playing,” she said.
Her team played South East in the semi-final and lost 20-8.
“We were very happy with how our team went.
“Playing against girls of Queensland and Australian standard was a very exciting experience, when we analysed our games we were only one or two goals behind in each chukka which is a great result for our women’s team,” she said.
“I’m very grateful to Lui and Betty Raiteri for lending me the horse I’m riding. It’s been the highlight of my polocrosse, finally reaching my goal of a representative team,” she said.
Lui Raiteri played well in his men’s team but unfortunately couldn’t make the final.
He said he was happy with his team’s efforts against great competition.
“I was very happy and proud of my team mates, it’s a credit to our selectors who had a hard job of picking the teams.
“Big thanks should also go to the sponsors and coaches,” he said.
The FN men’s first side took out the B grade men’s trophy in a fantastic final against Capricorn second men’s team.
