Raiders cut up Slashers
A-graders given ground after Slade Point reserves forfeit
SLADE POINT were no match for a fired up Proserpine-Whitsunday Raiders outfit at the Whitsunday Sports Park on Saturday as the home side romped home to a 71-12 win.
A forfeit by the Slashers in reserve grade saw the Raiders name an extended bench that allowed several fringe A graders to run on and maintain match fitness levels.
After only two minutes flying back Santiago Dominguez crossed for his first of two tries and Trent Elson also crossed to build an early 14-0 lead.
Raiders’ newcomer Santiago Fijalkauskas proved he had the goods by scoring a try in the 16th minute and he and Scott Vella crossed again to give the home side a 33-7 buffer at the break.
The tries continued to flow for the Raiders in the second half and they never looked trouble in the convincing 59-point win.
The forward pack of hardmen Steve Small- man, Graham West and Bill Pratt provided a solid platform up front with Tom Dray in the lock position adding to the bulk.
Trent Davis made his much awaited return from injury at number 8 and gave good protection to Dom Croker at halfback who was in turn able to provide clean ball to the backs.
This Saturday the Raiders will host the final regular season meeting between them and last year’s premiers Kuttabul. The reserves play at 4pm and A grade at 5.30pm. The day will be a themed Raiders Ladies Day and everyone is welcome to come along and support the team as they battle the reigning premiers.
MAKING A BREAK: Whitsunday Raiders player Dom Croker looks to secure possession during their big win over the Slade Point Slashers on Saturday at the Whitsunday Sports Park.
