Bruce rates as dangerous road

Whitsunday Times - - LOCAL NEWS -

THE majority of the Bruce Highway between Sarina, Mackay and Proserpine has been given low-end safety ratings of one and two stars in a key national road report.

The Australian Road Assessment Program (AusRAP) report, released last week, assesses the safety performance of national highways across Australia against a star-rating scale, with five stars being the best and one star the worst.

RACQ executive manager for public policy Mi- chael Roth said 90% of the Sarina to Mackay link and 40% of the Mackay to Proserpine link were rated one and two stars, well below the standard for a developed country.

“They’re undivided roads with high traffic volumes and have narrow sealed shoulders, frequent intersections and hazardous roadsides,” he said.

The entire Bruce Highway has a very poor crash history, with an average of 43 people killed in road crashes every year since 2008.
