Viking Cup a hit with junior rugby players
THE future of North Queensland rugby was on display last weekend when the Whitsunday Junior Rugby Union club hosted their inaugural Whitsunday Viking Cup carnival for under-10, 12 and 14 players. Teams travelled from Townsville, Burdekin, Charters Towers and Mackay for two days of grassroots rugby at the Whitsunday Sports Park.
All the games featured great sportsmanship, talent and competitiveness and event organiser Sharron Pratt said it was a very successful carnival that was enjoyed by all who attended.
“The tournament was all about participation, camaraderie and sportsmanship and lots of friendships were formed between our players and visitors over the weekend,” she said.
“The whole point of the weekend was to get some game time for our local players and the visiting teams were very accommodating and helped mix up teams to keep everything fair and competitive.”
The Viking Cup 10-aside tournament for juniors kicks off at the Whitsunday Sports Park from 6pm this Friday night.
STAR PERFORMERS: Whitsunday Junior Raiders players Jeremey Kempston, Ben Cornish and Jack Kearns were selected to play in the Queensland Bushrangers representative side last month.
