COUNTDOWN TO AIRLIE BEACH RACE WEEK
THE clock is ticking down to the Abell Point Marina Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW), which starts on August 9.
This major event, now in its 24th year, was officially launched for 2013 at a special function hosted by the Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) last week.
WSC commodore and event chairman Rob Davis said race week was an extraordinary event, bringing over 100 boats and an estimated 700 participants to Airlie Beach each year.
“This event involves six days of action-packed racing, countless hours of planning and around 30 volunteers,” he said.
“(There are) bands, sign writers, media caterers, safety boat crews and much, much, more to make this event come together.”
With this year’s regatta also incorporating the Australian Multihull Championships, Mr Davis said participants could expect to see some exciting racing in Pioneer Bay.
“For the last 24 years, we’ve strived to remain a relaxed, enjoyable regat- ta, coupled with some serious sailing,” he said.
“All of our competitors come for a good time whether they win or lose. It’s about mateship, excitement, socialising and a passion for sailing.”
Mr Davis thanked all the event sponsors including naming rights sponsor and owner of Abell Point Marina Paul Darrouzet.
Mr Darrouzet said he looked forward to a continued relationship with the WSC for many years to come.
“We want people to come to the marina, have a wonderful event, understand what we’re doing for the future and then come back next year when it’s going to be even better,” he said.
ABRW is part of Tourism and Events Queensland’s (TEQ) annual season of sailing and as such it was officially launched by Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan, on behalf of Tourism Minister Jann Stuckey.
Mr Costigan said TEQ was proud to support the event and he also commended the many volunteers who contribute to its success.
