EARLIER this year WMDL’s CEO announced that we would be undertaking a series of engagement sessions with each of the major towns in the region to discuss the future tourism marketing and development priorities of each of those regions.
We’ve now completed major tourism forums in Airlie Beach, Bowen, Collinsville and the Whitsunday islands, with the Proserpine tourism forum scheduled for Tuesday, August 13.
The priorities and outcomes of each forum have, of course, been many and varied.
As you would expect, the priorities of the islands and Airlie Beach differ greatly from those of the Collinsville community.
Though also not surprisingly, there’s been common themes.
These include improving the tourism experience across all mainland-based towns, increasing the focus on good customer service and creating new events that bring people from out of town to discover the culture of our diverse region.
There is a genuine desire in all of our communities to offer visitors a unique and memorable tourism experience, whether that’s land based, water based, family focused, backpacker focused, luxury focused, or whatever the focus might be.
And there is a genuine desire from each of the towns to focus on what they do well, leverage from what others do well and work together to promote the region and all of the diverse offerings it has to offer.
It has been a great experience to engage with each of the different parts of the region and understand the priorities of the community and work those ideas and priorities into our strategic plans for the year ahead.
For those of you who attended the Airlie Beach Tourism Summit, be on the look-out in two weeks for the three-month report back from Danial and the team on their progress since the summit.
I think you will be very happy with the progress on many of the items identified at that summit. And as always, if you’d like to get more involved in what WMDL are doing to promote and develop tourism in the region, please contact the partnership manager Greg France for more information on how you can do that.
