EAR­LIER this year WMDL’s CEO an­nounced that we would be un­der­tak­ing a se­ries of en­gage­ment ses­sions with each of the ma­jor towns in the re­gion to dis­cuss the fu­ture tourism mar­ket­ing and de­vel­op­ment pri­or­i­ties of each of those re­gions.

We’ve now com­pleted ma­jor tourism fo­rums in Air­lie Beach, Bowen, Collinsville and the Whit­sun­day is­lands, with the Proser­pine tourism fo­rum sched­uled for Tues­day, Au­gust 13.

The pri­or­i­ties and out­comes of each fo­rum have, of course, been many and var­ied.

As you would ex­pect, the pri­or­i­ties of the is­lands and Air­lie Beach dif­fer greatly from those of the Collinsville com­mu­nity.

Though also not sur­pris­ingly, there’s been com­mon themes.

Th­ese in­clude im­prov­ing the tourism ex­pe­ri­ence across all main­land-based towns, in­creas­ing the fo­cus on good cus­tomer ser­vice and cre­at­ing new events that bring peo­ple from out of town to dis­cover the cul­ture of our di­verse re­gion.

There is a gen­uine de­sire in all of our com­mu­ni­ties to of­fer vis­i­tors a unique and mem­o­rable tourism ex­pe­ri­ence, whether that’s land based, wa­ter based, fam­ily fo­cused, back­packer fo­cused, lux­ury fo­cused, or what­ever the fo­cus might be.

And there is a gen­uine de­sire from each of the towns to fo­cus on what they do well, lever­age from what oth­ers do well and work to­gether to pro­mote the re­gion and all of the di­verse of­fer­ings it has to of­fer.

It has been a great ex­pe­ri­ence to en­gage with each of the dif­fer­ent parts of the re­gion and un­der­stand the pri­or­i­ties of the com­mu­nity and work those ideas and pri­or­i­ties into our strate­gic plans for the year ahead.

For those of you who at­tended the Air­lie Beach Tourism Sum­mit, be on the look-out in two weeks for the three-month re­port back from Da­nial and the team on their progress since the sum­mit.
