Airlie Beach Race Week brings 110 boats and 700 crew
“BRIMMING with excitement”. This was how Abell Point Marina owner and Airlie Beach Race Week naming rights sponsor Paul Darrouzet described his feelings about the 24th annual regatta, which officially starts tomorrow (Friday, August 9).
Hosted by the Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC), the Abell Point Marina Airlie Beach Race Week (ABRW) is the largest keelboat regatta on Queensland’s mainland, with 110 yachts and about 700 crew about to set sail.
WSC commodore and regatta chairman Rob Davis said he was very happy with the number of entries for this year’s event which will also incorporate the Australian Multihull Championships and include competitors vying for the Queensland Season of Sailing Cup.
“Like every year, we hope everyone has a great time and when they go away and tell everybody how much fun they had it’ll bring more people back next year,” he said.
Mr Davis said this year’s regatta would include plenty of excitement both on and off the water.
Events scheduled to take place at the Sailing Club that are open to the community include a fine art exhibition on Sunday, a tropical shirt margarita and Corona lay day party on Tuesday and the Jimmy Buffett Tribute Band and official presentations next Friday.
Mr Davis said he hoped the community would enjoy some or all of these events.
“We want the community to get behind the spectacular side of sailing, join in the events at the club, or just come to Airlie Beach to enjoy the number of exciting events over the week,” he said.
Popular radio show host Meecham Philpott will also join the regatta as the official MC to assist with presentations and announcements throughout the week.
ABRW runs from August 9-16, followed by the Whitsunday Reef Festival from August 15-18, Great Whitsunday Fun Race on August 17, Hamilton Island Race Week from August 17-24 and Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club Vice Commodore Rendezvous from August 22-25.
