Bait fish a plenty at Shute Harbour
GREAT weather conditions had plenty of boats hitting the reef chasing some quality fishing action on the weekend.
There were some excellent reports of Spanish mackerel taken both trolling the pressure points of the reefs and also live baiting while on anchor bottom fishing.
Fishers also reported good numbers of trout, red throat and other mixed reef species from the shallow water and some quality emperor and nannygai from the deeper shoals. It looks like the weather will hold for a little longer so this weekend could see some more quality fishing to be had. Ashley Matthews Sea Fever Sportfishing Whitsundays
Some nice red emperor and a mixed bag of reef fish have been caught around the is- lands this week. There are plenty of Spanish mackerel about and lots of reports of wolf herring, which are the number one fish to use to catch Spanish mackerel.
Fishers should float them out or try trolling to get the best results.
Schools of herring have been spotted around Shute Harbour and some permit fish were also caught there, using imitation crab flies as bait.
There is still a lot of grunter around and there have also been reports of some big flathead caught using live poddy mullet as bait.
Cod are reacting well to prawns, squid and pilchard and have been taking the bait off plenty of lines over the last week. The occasional barra’ is still being caught with anglers using deep-diving lures. Geoff Philp Airlie Bait and Tackle
The warmer, calm conditions have made for great fishing in the dam with good size barra’ being caught in a number of spots.
The best places to target are the trees that line the creeks on the Western side of the lake, as barramundi are attracted to the warmer waters on that side.
Tides are a little large at the Proserpine River due to the new moon but it’s still a good idea to go and chase some crabs.
If the good weather conditions continue until the quarter moon phase next week the river should fish very well for salmon and a few barramundi. Lindsay Dobe Proserpine Bait and Tackle
