Trash Bags host first bout
ROLLER DERBY SENIORS
THE Airlie Beach Trash Bags Roller Derby team divided into two teams for their first home bout on Friday night at the Whitsunday PCYC.
New skaters from Bowen and Mackay were invited to play and referees travelled from Mackay and Townsville for the game.
In a hotly contested match, the Blue Suede Bruisers beat the Pink Blitz, 364 – 245 with Hayley ‘Gretchen Wheelers’ Waugh winning the most valuable player award for the night.
Seven Airlie Beach skaters played their first bout included Suz ‘Bruise-a-lot’ Crabtree, Tina ‘Bust-her Tredrea’ Court, Karina ‘Rina Roars’ Gamack, Cathy ‘Puk Her Up’ Pukallus, Jessi ‘ Tickle Me Doll Face’ Egan and Amy ‘Aim N Fire’ Dempsey.
Tina ‘Bust-her Tredrea’ Court said she was so proud of everyone for the fantastic job they did.
“Friday night was great, I was so nervous at the start but I got out there quite a few times and laid on some good hits. I learnt so much on and off the track,” she said.
Coach Christina ‘ Storm Surge’ Unterwurzacher said that they were very thankful for the support of the PCYC.
“We’re so grateful we were able to host this game at our training venue, the Whitsunday PCYC, but in order to have a bigger crowd we really need a venue that is larger than a single basketball court,” she said.
Anyone interested in joining derby, whether as a skater, a referee, or an official can head to the fresh meat course beginning on Sunday, August 25 at the PCYC. For more information visit www.facebook.com/AirlieBeachTrashBags.
