Service to recognise war heroes
A SERVICE dedicated to the memory of all Vietnam veterans and the soldiers of D Company 6 RAR who lost their lives at the battle of Long Tan in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam in 1966, will be held this Sunday at 11am.
The service is dedicated to Vietnam Veterans Day and the battle of Long Tan and will be held at the Cannonvale Botanical Gardens near the Cannonvale State School.
Airlie Beach RSL sub branch deputy president Bill Rose said the bat- tle of Long Tan was one of the larger battles in Vietnam. “The Vietnam war, even though it was unpopular, it was our responsibility to take part in recognition of the treaties of the free nations and the soldiers that were sent did the bidding of the government at the time,” he said.
“They did a good job and proved they still carried on the ANZAC spirit even though many of them were conscripts. There was only a small group of Australians who took on over 2000 Viet Cong in the battle of Long Tan and their courage should be admired and remembered.”
The service will be held in conjunction with the Proserpine RSL Sub Branch to allow for veterans, visitors, family and friends to come together to pay their respects.
The service will last for half an hour followed by a reunion and a meet and greet at the Airlie Beach RSL sub branch rooms at the Reef Gateway Hotel.
