Wearable art on show
PROSERPINE students made a big impact at Saturday’s 2013 Mackay Student Festival of Fashion, ahead of this weekend’s Whitsunday Reef Festival Rotary Wearable Art Awards.
Seven regional secondary schools competed in the annual fashion event, which had 105 entries.
The Proserpine students took out five prizes, including the supreme award, in a colourful and interesting celebration of talent and creativity.
Isabella Demartini (Year 10), Pagan Malcolm and Laura Hurren (Year 11) and Marissa Oliver (Year 12) proudly represented their school with 13 entries in seven of the 11 categories. Their models Tenae Stockwell, Laura Vlasic, Ayla Hadley, Marie Philp, Natasha Coyne and Jesse Young helped the young designers to showcase their talents
Marissa Oliver won the Pulp Fiction category with her beautifully crafted paper creation. Her unique evening dress was runner up in the Red Carpet category and her trio of arty denim garments won a Special Mention award in the Renew, Reinvent, Recycle category. Marissa’s enthusiasm for design over her record six entries at the festival won her the Supreme Award.
Isabella Demartini won the Beach and Resort Wear category with a trendy duo in classic red, white and blue.
The judges, well known artists and designers Inge Hilhorst, Brittney Hudson and Lauren Taylor, praised all of the students for their sewing skills, attention to detail and originality.
The talented young local designers are now looking forward to the Reef Festival’s Wearable Art Awards. This must-see event will be held on stage in the main street of Airlie Beach from 1pm on Saturday prior to the Rotary Street Parade.
