Whitsunday Times - - REELIN’ IN - Tim Tutureski Proserpine Bait and Tackle

THERE have been great conditions for fishing the reef over the last week.Steady numbers of reef fish and pelagics have been caught with some quality spanish mackerel up to 35kg being taken. This good weather is looking to continue, providing more opportunities to get out to the reef for the keen fishermen. While there are mackerel about, reports of good catches have been slow. Lots of small reef sharks have been caught, as well as small barracuda and long toms. These fish put up a great fight to really test your fishing skills, however they are not good eating fish as they have a lot of bones.

Fishing conditions this weekend are looking fantastic, so get out on the water if possible.

The conditions have been great for fishing the rockwalls around town. There have been good reports of threadfin and bream caught using live baits like small herring and large green peeled prawns. Geoff Philp Airlie Bait and Tackle

Some good barramundi have been caught around the tops of the trees. Best time to target the fish is early to mid-morning. Try using barra baits, or if you find the bait in the dam you will find the fish.

RIVER There have been a few fish caught recently, mostly threadfin salmon.

Last week the tides were a bit too big for good results, however the upcoming weeks should be good if this weather holds out.

Try trolling the deeper holes and drops offs in the river, using lures or fresh bait.

There have been some reports of grunter and whiting caught at the mouth of the river also.
