Paddlers do well at Mission Beach event
OUTRIGGER Whitsunday (OW) recently travelled over 500km to compete at Mission Beach regatta held at South Mission Beach. Very strong winds and swell of up to 2m made racing very difficult but OW senior and junior paddlers proved they were up for the challenge.
The OW master women received a well-earned bronze medal in the 9km OC6 marathon and a 4th place in the sprint.
OW senior master men Terry Kemp and Mark Bell brought home silver in the 4km OC2 and the OW master men placed 7th in the marathon and sprint.
Paddler Charlie Wilkie won the 24km Vaka race paddling solo on a sure ski.
All the junior paddlers received medals in their OC1, OC2 and OC6 events.
Outrigger Whitsunday will be hosting the last grand prix regatta of the North Queensland zone in Airlie Beach on Saturday, September 7.
This will bring more than 300 paddlers to town. Head to the lagoon beach on Broad- water Avenue to catch the paddling action all day.
Sponsors and volunteers are needed to make the event successful.
Anyone interested should contact Renee Martin on 0412 448 805.
