Fishing mates land massive black marlin
A HUGE black marlin, estimated at about 80kg, was caught by local fishermen at the reef on Sunday, August 11.
The four anglers, John ‘Hollywood’ Moore, Stuart Burgess, Ryan Kenny and Wayne Juppenlatz, took advantage of the recent ideal conditions to take Juppenlatz’s 38ft boat Sushi Hunter to the reef targeting billfish, and were amazed when Moore landed this monster marlin, the biggest billfish to be caught on the boat to date.
The fish was caught on a 15kg line. It took 45 minutes for Moore to wear the fish out and three men to lift the monster to get a photo before they released it.
Juppenlatz, who regularly travels from Brisbane to the Whitsundays to fish, said the feeling on the boat was awesome.
“We were giving John stick about it taking so long, and then when the fish launched we saw just how big it was” he said, adding that it made a spectacular sight launching itself out of the water directly behind the boat.
Juppenlatz has been visiting the Whitsundays all his life, and is a regular competitor in Whitsunday fishing tournaments. He will be entering Sushi Hunter in the upcoming Whitsunday Game Fish Club’s Light Tackle Game Fish Tournament in October, and plans on revisiting his new favourite, undisclosed, reef location in the competition.
