New product fighting fuel contamination

Whitsunday Times - - WHITSUNDAY BUSINESS -

FUEL contamination can be a major problem for common rail diesel engines but local business airlie brakes and suspension have introduced a product that can help avoid this costly issue.

The Drivetech 4x4 Fuel Manager is a pre-filter kit that helps protect vital fuel injection components from water, humidity, dirty fuel and other contaminants.

The 30 micron Fuel Manager pre-filter water separation kit operates in addition to the factory installed filter, which is usually about 5-10 micron.

It is attached to the vehicle by a stainless steel mounting bracket, made to suit individual car models, and fits like a glove in the engine bay without having to modify existing vehicle components. It has a glass bowl to see if there is water and a spin-off cartridge that is inexpensive to replace.

The Fuel Manager pre-filter will help prevent the chance of contaminated fuel reaching your engine, which is particularly useful to reduce stress when fuel is coming from an unknown or un-trusted source, which can happen a lot when travelling long distances.

Steve Knox at airlie brake and suspension said he sees a lot of common rail engines coming in with problems caused by contaminated fuel, and fixing them can cost in the thousands.

“With our 4WD background and experience, we understand that prevention is better than cure when it comes to modern common rail fuel systems,” Mr Knox said.

“This pre-filter will actually filter your fuel prior to it going to the factory filter. It fits in beautifully with the engine, looking like it’s meant to be there and it doesn’t affect fuel consumption.”

Mr Knox said from ordering your filter to complete installation should only take a few days, depending on the model required. Replacement spin filters are also rea- dily available. “Don’t risk damaging your expensive fuel system” Mr Knox advised, adding that the cost of the filter and installation, about $595 for most common models and providing there are no after market accessories obstructing the installation of the stainless bracket, could save you thousands in the long run.
