Warm weather brings barramundi back
THE barra are back on the bite as the dam heats up with the warmer weather, with some good size catches reported last week.
Fishing the shallows of the deep water is getting good results, so try casting the sticks at the back of the dam.
The next two weeks should see conditions improve even more, however the red claw are still a bit patchy.
The tides are starting to get smaller, which means the water should clear and fishing conditions should improve. There are threadfin being caught and more reports of barra as they start to become active again in the warmer salt water.
Vibe lures are effective if targeting salmon and try trolling or casting the drains if targeting barra.
Dayne Thompson Proserpine Bait and Tackle ISLANDS
It’s that great time of year again when the juvenile black marlin are being found around the islands. Try trolling garfish or mullet to catch the billfish. The best time of day is around mid-morning, however they can be aggressive biters throughout the day also. The paddock off Hayman Island is proving a good place to target, you might even jag a mackerel there. Reports of mackerel catches are also coming in good numbers. They are being sighted everywhere, especially around the outer islands. Double Cones has been producing some nice coral trout and sweetlip varieties.
The GTs have gone a bit quiet, however the queenies are still around, as are the barra. Fishing off Cannonvale Beach has been yielding some good catches also.
Geoff Philp Airlie Bait and Tackle REEF
Fishing the reef has been steady over the last week, with the nice weather. On the days it glassed out or when we had a little north west in the wind the fish were a little on the shy side and not really feeding well.
Once the wind came back around to the south east, the bite increased and some good fish were reported. There are good signs for sportfishermen with some sailfish and black marlin showing up. This will hopefully continue for a few more months yet.
The building tides to the new moon next week should see the best mackerel fishing for the month. Hopefully the weather will be kind and allow us to get out there.
