Pairs cham­pi­ons crowned

AIR­LIE BOWLS

THIS week was an ex­cit­ing week for the Air­lie Bowls club with the pair’s cham­pion of cham­pi­ons for the Mackay Dis­trict played on their green.

Four matches were played for the ti­tle where Mackay Club play­ers Dot McNa­mara and Mary Clancy de­feated the St. Helen’s team of Nug­gie Pratt and Lois Deguara. South Sub­ur­ban club play­ers Del McKelvie and Di Faulkner de­feated Mar­ian club play­ers Fay Erick­son and Noela Cox, lo­cals Margo Stan­ley and Betty Ni­colle de­feated Pi­o­neer Val­ley reps Helen Pi­et­zner and Mar­i­lyn Head and North Mackay bowlers E. Buck­ton and B. Sven­son de­feated Sa­rina club reps Carmel Jenk­ins and Ethel Gaw.

Dur­ing the af­ter­noon three matches were played where He­lena Mil­tenburg and Helen Hoog­w­erf from Sa­rina de­feated Proser­pine’s Lois Read and Dot Hin­schen, South Sub­ur­ban’s Di Faulkner and Del McKelvie de­feated Air­lie Beach’s Margo Stan­ley and Betty Ni­colle, North Mackay’s B Sven­son and E Bock­ton de­feated Mackay’s Dot McNa­mara and Mary Clancy on the twenty-sec­ond end.

It was a most en­ter­tain­ing day for the many spec­ta­tors who wit­nessed the games. The Air­lie pair played very well but in their sec­ond game they came up against the cou­ple from South Sub­ur­ban who have rep­re­sented the Mackay Dis­trict so a hard one for them to win.

At the men’s club on Wed­nes­day play was strongly con­tested.

John For­nasiero and Ge­off Hoare de­feated Colin Howes and Jack Dob­bins 34-19, Gra­ham Walder, David Stock and Herb Se­comb de­feated David Zim­mer­man, Steve Tat­tam and Dave Tin­dall 22-21, Ken Ry­der, Ken Mcal­lis­ter and Jeff New­man de­feated Ted Evans, Ron Spence and Wally Gray 23-21 and Nik Fern­bach, Dom Sposato and Keith Beetham de­feated Leigh Wil­liamson, Jim Cairns and Keith Beetham 27-19.

Their Jackpot was not won.

On Sun­day mem­bers were happy to wel­come back from hol­i­day the ladies pres­i­dent Margo Stan­ley who was de­lighted to see so many bowlers in at­ten­dance.

Win­ners for the af­ter­noon were Margo Stan­ley, Jo Howes and Wally Gray who de­feated David Zim­mer­man, June Walsh and Betty Hol­ness 16-7, while sec­ond place went to Nic Fern­bach, Jeff New­man and Herb Se­comb.

Third plac­ing was Colin Howes, Ron Spence and Betty Stock who de­feated Steve Tat­tam, Keith Beetham and Ma­bel Davy.

Margo Stan­ley let ev­ery­one know that she had re­turned by not only win­ning on the af­ter­noon but also win­ning the raf­fle as well.

This Sun­day bowlers will be play­ing for a do­na­tion made by Humphries Pty. Ltd.

They look for­ward to hav­ing all play­ers in at­ten­dance for this im­por­tant day.

On Tues­day, Septem­ber 10 the ladies club are hav­ing a come-and-try day from 12.30pm.

LAD­DER LEAD­ERS: Gary and Cathy Rus­sell, Keith McKen­zie and Mau­reen Barnard from the Char­ter Yachts Aus­tralia team, who are on top of the Busi­ness House Bowls lad­der. The sea­son is com­ing to an end and the com­pe­ti­tion is very close.
