Whitsunday angler wins Cairns championship
LOCAL angler Ross Martin has been busy representing the Whitsundays in some North Queensland biggest billfish competitions in August.
He won the prestigious title of champion senior angler in the Cairns Bluewater Billfish - Jack Erskine Memorial that was held from 7-10 August.
A member of the Whitsunday Game Fish Club, Martin has been a keen fisherman for about 22 years, and spent eight years charter fishing in the top end.
He said conditions were ideal in Cairns, where the boats moored off Fitzroy Island for the three day tournament.
His winning catch included tagging two black marlin and one sailfish, all around the 18kg mark. The boat he was on, Blue Moon, was awarded second overall champion boat.
“It was good to win,” Martin said. “They’re really competitive up there, but it’s still a lot of fun.”
He competed again last weekend in the 2013 Townsville Billfish Challenge, where he skippered a 55ft vessel with some Townsville anglers onboard. While the boat didn’t get a podium win, one of the female crew members was awarded heaviest other game fish prize for a Spanish mackerel she caught.
Martin will be competing in the Whitsunday Game Fish Club’s Light Tackle Game Fish Tournament from October 3-6. While it’s only the second time he’s fished this comp, he hopes his years of experience will help him pull out a few tricks to take out the local championship.
