Magic racing at Maggie
WHITSUNDAY Sailing Club boats Huahine (Nick Smail) and J’Ouvert (Peter Berry) have been representing the region at the 2013 Sealink Magnetic Island Race Week, which wrapped up on Tuesday.
Nick Smail and his wife Michelle entered Huahine in the cruising non-spinnaker division and enjoyed a very successful regatta, with first, second, fifth and third place results. At the end of the regatta Huahine placed second overall in the division, which Smail said was a great result.
“We’ve had a very enjoyable regatta,” he said.
“They’re very hospitable up here. The weather’s been great, the beer’s cold – it’s all good.”
The Smails sailed north after Airlie Beach Race Week with fellow Whitsunday resident Adrian Pelt as crew. Other Whitsunday sailors who were able to join them during the regatta included Kathryn Galloway and Sheree Paparone. After very light winds at both Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island race weeks, Smail said the breeze finally picked up at Magnetic Island with a “very windy last race”. He said the crew would be heading home when the wind died down and after a few cold, celebratory drinks.
Meanwhile J’Ouvert placed fifth overall in the multihull division. Skipper Pete Berry said the crew did not sail the last race but overall it was a “fantastic regatta”.
