Trashbags joining Townsville derby team

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

FIVE of the Airlie Beach Trashbags skaters have been invited to play for Townsville team The Slaughterers this Saturday night against the Cairns Derby Dolls.

The Cairns Derby Dolls narrowly beat players from the Trashbags at the Northern Tropical Thunder tournament in June this year, so the rivalry is expected to be fierce.

Sydney skater Denise ‘Ruby Soho’ Unterwurzacher from the Inner West Roller Derby League visited Airlie Beach at the weekend and joined the Trashbags for Friday night scrim training and Sunday morning’s fresh meat session.

Airlie Beach skaters enjoyed the visit as it gave them the opportunity to learn from a skater with four years of roller derby experience.

Unterwurzacher said she loved coming to visit the Airlie Beach team.

“I really enjoy coming up to visit the Trashbags and watching them grow as skaters and as a league. They have improved so much in the 12 months since I’ve known them and are a real inspiration,” Unterwurzacher said.

“I’m also really glad to see so much interest from the community and the enthusiasm of the freshies is exciting. They are joining a really great sport and I can’t wait to see how much they have improved again next time I come to visit.”
