AUSTRALIAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIPS
AUSTRALIA’S best supermoto riders are coming to our area for the 2013 Australian Supermoto Championships at the Whitsunday Raceway this weekend.
The 2013 championships will take place over three action packed days, starting with to- morrow’s official practice day.
Whitsunday Moto Sports Club president Andrew Auld said it will be one of the biggest ever weekends at the raceway.
“We have had over 100 nominations so far and everyone has been working hard all week to make sure the track is ready,” he said.
“There are a good number of local riders involved and Andy McLiesh is definitely one to keep an eye on. If he has a good weekend and everything goes right then I’m sure he’ll find himself on the podium.”
Tomorrow’s practice will give most riders their first look at the purpose-built track and help them plan their race and fine tune their machines.
Visiting motorcycle stunt team 51-Fifty will also be in action on Friday night with a show at the Reef Gateway Hotel followed directly by a meet and greet.
The final practice session and qualifying for the championships gets under way on Saturday morning as the racing between international and national stars gets under way.
Sunday afternoon will see the final event, the dash for cash, where the fastest 24 competitors from the weekend leave it all on the track in a 10-lap race.
All tickets cover the three days of racing and entry is free for under-5s, $10 for under-15s, $20 for adults or $40 for a family pass.
