RUGBY UNION RAIDERS WIN GRAND FINALS IN BOTH GRADES
THE Proserpine Whitsunday Raiders A Grade team defeated Kuttabul Camelboks in a 21 to 3 victory in the Mackay District Rugby Union grand finals on Saturday.
Within three minutes the Kuttabul Camelboks were lining up for their first penalty, but missed. They received their second penalty shortly after, taking the 3 points to lead the game.
In the 20th minute, the Raiders were rewarded with a marvellous Martin Roveda penalty kick to draw 3-3.With the backs taking every opportunity to widen the play, the Raiders threw the ball to winger Scott Vella who dashed to the far corner to score.
Roveda’s amazing sideline conversion gave the boys the lead 10-3.
At half time the boys were right where they needed to be but the loudest roar of the day came when co-captain for the season Ron Croker took the field for the first time in six weeks due to injury. In the 55th minute, another professional Roveda kick extended the Raiders lead to 13 to 3.
Almost against the run of play, the Raiders put together a brilliant try with wonderful backline play that saw winger Dom Croker, with Micky Dyring at halfback, wind his way over to the far corner to score.
This was unconverted, but the boys were up 18-3 and their game was still improving while the Boks had seemingly lost their composure, discipline and ball possession at the break down
The Raiders were given a kickable penalty by Roveda, which put the Raiders out to an unbeatable 21-3 lead.
The great defence of the second half was the cornerstone to the win as they weathered the storm until the siren sounded.
The Raiders presentation night will be held this Saturday from 6.30pm.
