Competitive finish for business house bowls
AIRLIE BEACH BOWLS
THE regular stream of visitors over the past few months have eased off as they all head for home, but several were there to play last week, including Clyde and Yvonne Rutherford, Mick Browning, Bernie Hickman, Dennis Ruse, Jeff Newman and Ron Ryan.
On Tuesday, September 2, the ladies winners were Yvonne and Clyde Rutherford with Jill Spencer who defeated Di Dobbins, Marie Welsh and Margo Stanley 16/13.
The men’s games on Wednesday were very competitive, and the winners were David Stock, Nik Fernbach and Dennis Ruse who defeated John Fornasiero, Dom Sposato and Herb Secomb 30/5.
On the next rink Ken Ryder, Greg Burge and Keith Beetham defeated Clyde Rutherford, Mick Browning and Wally Gray 15/9, and on rink 5 David Zimmerman, Bernie Hickman and Jeff Newman defeated Col Howes, Ron Spencer and Jack Dobbins 23/15.
Business House Bowls played their last game on Wednesday night. The overall winners were Charter Yachts Australia, followed closely by Porters and Whitsunday Escape.
The last few rounds were very competitive, and all teams tried to improve their game and beat Charter Yachts, who lead for most of the series. These improvements brought the winning margins down dramatically, and it was one of the closest series yet. The last round of the 2013 competition will start in October.
Those playing barefoot bowls on Friday night were joined by the pioneers from Airlie Beach reunion that occurred earlier in June.
They enjoyed viewing the new historical DVD and photos which were compiled by photographer Adrian Connor.
The ladies fours carnival will be held on Tuesday, October 1 and bring a friend day to the club is on Tuesday, 17 September. The dates for the Whitsunday Food Services day will be advised soon.
The club’s annual general meeting will be on Sunday, September 29 at 10.30am and the next board meeting is on 17 September at 5pm.
GREAT RESULT: The Charter Yachts Australia team Maureen Barnard, Cathy Russell, Keith McKenzie and Gary Russell holding the perpetual trophies after their winning game last Wednesday.
BOWLING FUN: Nick Fernbach, Steve Tattam, Ron Ryan, Ron Spence, David Zimmerman and David Dias enjoyed a game of social bowls at the Airlie Beach Bowls Club on Sunday afternoon.
